Why Tamiko is in the Spotlight

Tamiko Kendrick fell into HR by accident. She has always had a passion for helping people, finding joy in meeting and connecting with every person who walked through her door. She wanted to work with the people in her community, and it became clear that HR was a great fit.

Tamiko most enjoys the problem solving aspect of her job. There are some gray areas when dealing with people issues, whether it is labor relations, performance, etc. She works with individuals to find a solution that is a win-win for them and the organization. Providing the resources and tools people need to be successful is very rewarding for her, especially when that means helping people obtain opportunities that would not otherwise have been afforded to them. She is inspired by seeing the transformation of people’s lives to meet their maximum potential — when she can see someone go from good to great.

One of the things she has become most passionate about throughout her journey is making the business case for an organization to embrace diversity and dedicate a professional resource for this cause. At her current organization, diversity is now a core value embedded throughout the fiber of the organization, beginning with the recruiting process. Tamiko continues to promote diversity inclusion outside of her organization, serving as the Diversity Director for HR Indiana SHRM.

Tamiko believes the her experiences with SHRM were the foundation that catapulted her career into leadership. Membership helps her stay connected and current, with resources and updates on employment trends, current laws and regulations. She has implemented best practices she’s learned through membership to her career and other endeavors.

Outside of work, Tamiko loves to travel. One of  the destinations on her bucket list is Victoria Falls in southern Africa, the largest waterfall in the world and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. She often tells people that her new job title after retirement will be “professional vacationer.”
