SHRM Update August 2018

Callie Zipple, SHRM-CP SHRM Field Services Director

Hello Indiana Chapter Presidents and Presidents-Elect –

Just wanted to reach out with a quick update for your summer.  Feel free to forward to your fellow chapter leaders as you see appropriate.

Coming Soon!

A new guidebook created for HR professionals is coming soon that will review and articulate the business case for hiring veterans and identify best practices for employers wishing to recruit, hire and retain military job seekers. It specifically outlines how hiring veterans using a proactive strategy tied to an organization’s business can provide the foundation for a competitive advantage. To illustrate this, the guidebook provides examples of leading practices from companies that have developed successful veteran hiring initiatives.

Introducing: Honest HR

SHRM’s trying new things!  We’ve introduced a podcast with yours truly as co-host.  I’m inserting this in your update because we want to hear from you and your members!  If you know of anyone who might have topic suggestions or be interested in being a guest on an upcoming episode, please have them contact me directly!

To learn more about the podcast and what we’re trying to do with this platform, take a look at my SHRM blog post. If you’re interested in listening, visit the SHRM website or listen/subscribe on Spotify, iTunes or Buzzsprout.

Chapter/State Council Events

As a reminder, the activities outlined in Section II of SHAPE are required for all chapters who anticipate applying for the 2018 Excel Award.  Any chapters who have events with over 200 attendees should reach out with as much notice as possible to ensure SHRM Field Services Director presence.  As a reminder, events of that size should include prime booth space and a minimum of 15 minutes of podium time.  Please let me know ASAP if you have any such events scheduled!

Also, if you don’t have events over 200 but you have an event you’re particularly excited about (i.e. first of its kind, biggest event of the year, high-quality speaker), let me know and I’ll do my best to get there to support your chapter efforts!

Ending on a High Note

I’m going to start “ending on a high note” with something that’s happened or that I witnessed since the last update at a chapter or state event in an effort to share best practices with others.  At a recent Speakers Bureau presentation at East Central Indiana HRA, I was introduced to their chapter’s “Good News Dollars” initiative.  They allow members to donate dollars so they can take the floor to share good news that’s happened since the last meeting.  Some of the things shared were promotions, new job postings & award-winning muffin recipes.  It was a great way to celebrate the wins of chapter members & all proceeds to go the SHRM Foundation.  Well done, ECIHRA!

Don’t forget to reach out to me with any questions you have and please let me know how I can help support your chapter/state efforts.

Have a great rest of your summer!
