WHICH EXAM IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

Certification Self-Assessment Tool

SHRM can help you make a more thoughtful decision that will set you up for success. The enhanced self-assessment tool below allows HR professionals to measure both eligibility and type of HR experience.

The self-assessment tool asks a series of questions about your career level, educational background and HR experience. It then presents a series of paired statements and asks you to select the statement that most closely describes your current or recent job.

Based on your responses to all of the questions, the tool will recommend the best exam for you: the SHRM-CP or the SHRM-SCP (or, for those who are not yet eligible for SHRM certification, a SHRM Specialty Credential).

Go to https://www.shrm.org/certification/decide/Pages/shrm-certifications.aspx to take the brief 15 second quiz to learn which exam may be right for you!

Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge

The SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge™ (SHRM BASK™), formerly the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge® (SHRM BoCK®), represents the evolution of the SHRM Competency Model by further defining the knowledge areas in addition to the behavioral competencies.

In addition to describing the HR field, the SHRM BASK is used to define the content areas of SHRM’s certification examinations: the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP®) exam for HR professionals in operational roles and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP®) exam for senior-level HR professionals in strategic roles. The two SHRM credentials provide reliable indicators to the global business community that the credential-holder is a recognized expert and leader in the HR field with the necessary capabilities in both aspects of HR practice—competencies and knowledge—that are required for effective job performance.

RECERTIFICATION INFORMATION – Getting Started With Recertification

Shared from: https://www.shrm.org/certification/recertification/Pages/get-recertified.aspx

Earning your SHRM certification credential proves your competence in the HR field and your dedication to the profession. Maintaining the credential shows that you are committed to self-improvement, continued growth and development, and HR excellence.

With continuing education as its cornerstone, the SHRM recertification process supports your efforts to stay at the top of your game by maintaining your competence and relevance in the field, thereby maximizing the value of your SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP credential.

Once certified, your recertification cycle begins the day you pass the exam and ends three years later, on the last day of your birth month.

Recertification Cycle Example:

  • Your birth month is July
  • You take and pass the exam on May 3, 2023
  • Initial recertification cycle start date: May 3, 2023
  • Cycle end date: July 31, 2026
  • Certification revoked: September 30, 2026

You must complete your recertification within this three-year timeframe. Credential-holders who do not complete these requirements then enter a 60-day grace period. However, the recertification fee increases by $50 and your certification will be revoked at the end of the grace period if your recertification is not completed by then.

HR professionals attain recertification by engaging in professional development activities that relate to the behavioral competencies and HR knowledge identified in the SHRM Body of Applied Skills and Knowledge™ (SHRM BASK™).
