Why She’s in the Spotlight

Marilyn Faulkenburg has been involved in HR in some way for most of her life. She worked for Target Stores at the executive level for 25 years, then moving to Caesars Entertainment, where she was over HR for six years.

After working in the field, she decided to pursue her master’s degree in HR and management. She eventually went on to get her doctorate in leadership education so she could start teaching, sharing her passion with the next generation of people managers.

Marilyn is also putting her training and her experience as a teacher and mentor to use as president of Southern Indiana SHRM (SISHRM).

Q&A with Marilyn

Q: What do you love most about your job?

A: I love being able to work with students so they can gain the knowledge they need for their current or future HR roles. I enjoy helping them learn to be more productive and develop a good knowledge base.

Q: As president of SISHRM, what’s an initiative you are excited about in your chapter?

A: One initiative I am excited about is the live streaming of chapter meetings through Zoom.  This is offered to chapter members, as well as HR professionals in the 19 surrounding counties who do not have a local SHRM chapter. It gives these individuals a great opportunity to engage with us and stay informed.

Q: Why is SHRM and HR Indiana SHRM membership important to you?

A: My membership keeps me connected to other HR professionals and helps me stay abreast of workplace issues and new knowledge. My advice: get into a chapter ASAP!

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

A: I love to travel and spend time with my family — I most recently went to Australia. I am also an avid reader. One book I recommend to all business professionals is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg, which dives into how people think and the science behind forming habits.
